Ghost Opera
Ghost Opera (2016)
Boston, MA
This was a five-hour durational work performed in a completely darkened room within an abandoned fort on Georges Island off the coast of Boston.
The work was based on the legend of the Woman in Black said to haunt Fort Warren which was used as a confederate prison during the Civil War. Disguised as a man, she was caught attempting to free her captured husband and was eventually hanged for the crime. The story has includes many auditory elements (whistling a Southern tune as a signal to the husband; the clang of a pickax that altered the guards, etc.) that were incorporated into the sound collage soundtrack played on four different mp3 players set on random. Illuminated by a single shaft of light, I stood motionless and sang continuously in the humid resonant space.
